Top Chef, French & US - random thoughts
-Top Chef France is a huge disappointment. Which is seriously embarrassing because the current season of the US Top Chef is all kinds of brilliant and entertaining. Of course I felt a little pang when Marcel left (after having everybody hate him with no reason -- again) but I still like most of the remaining contestants. Although I was so sad Fabio got eliminated! Nooooes! He was such a bunch of fun! Dale should have been the one sent home, I can't stand him!
Anyway what I'm saying is that, in France, we don't know how to make good reality-TV shows. The episodes go on for for-fucking-EVER, they're like, a HUNDRED hours long, during which nothing of real interest ever happens, only the chefs are far more neurotic than in the US version, they always take the first chance to flagellate themselves and the drama is always accompanied by slow-motion, sepia images and violins. Plus the music is wayyyyy over the top, like the chefs are merely chopping onions and all of a sudden the music goes all Carmina Burana for no apparent reason. And when a contestant leaves (FINALLY, because they make them go through about thirty different challenges in one episode before the judges bring themselves to eliminate only ONE person) they all but blast Schubert's Ave Maria through the TV's speakers. It's actually really painful to watch. Plus the food never seems as interesting as in the US version (I know, shame on us, right?).
-Last week in Top Chef France some idiot screwed up a soft-boiled egg dish. He cooked the egg too long so it was just a boiled egg in the end. LO-SER. You dare call yourself a chef? Bitch please. I immediately thought of Gail Simmons and her love of eggs at that time -- she would have instantly killed him dead with a spoon if the idiot had had the gall to serve it to her.
-In Top Chef US: I love Carla! I really hope she wins. She reminds me of Beaker, somehow (and I never thought the comparison would be so adequate, seeing next episode's preview!). A finale with Angelo, Richard and Carla would be really interesting, I think.
-Although Top Chef is cool and all, my favourite show is in fact Top Chef Masters. The great chefs have such incredible personalities, and the food is always pretty spectacular; I also prefer Kelly Choi as a host, Padma always makes me a little uneasy (my friends and I call her the Android. It's like she's from another planet and always tries her best to replicate human emotions on her face but it doesn't go without a lot of approximation, like "Is this the way you guys usually express it...?"). When oh when will it be back, I need a new season like BURNING.

Who do you think will win the competition? I'd like Carla to win but I think it might be Richard who prevails in the end, if he doesn't get too nervous.

I totally think Carla should win, I love her and she does make me think of Beaker lol.
