I thought it was Muay Thai too at first but apparently it's an Indonesian martial art called "silat"; it's really great of Gareth Evans to have chosen to bring it forward, because I didn't even know Indonesia had their own martial art! But yeah, god, awesome movie, and you're right, the story is indeed a bit unique! So refreshing!
