I was actually genuinely curious, not trying to say the timeline didn't make sense in a coy sort of way or anything. I've read Ovid in the original and know the basic myth from Plato, but I know much less about Dumas. Or, come to it, pre-Revolution France - that's simply not my bailiwick, and so I'm not in a good position to know what level of fluency is reasonable. Your explanation makes sense to me and only leaves me enjoying the story that much the more.
(Full disclosure: I haven't read any of Dumas' books since I was young Athos's age, and only seen one or two episodes of the recent series - I mainly read this as historical fiction by a fanfic author I like because the summary intrigued me. So while I could imagine the Ovid quite easily, I'm sure I have a clunky mental image of the world, clunkier than I would if I were a proper fan of this work. I enjoyed it regardless.)
