So one night as I was going through my kanjis, I decided I could treat myself and read a little yaoi (have a break, have a yaoi, that's my motto). There was nothing new on Aarinfantasy I could nibble on, so I thought I'd give a shot to that original fiction
berylia recommended me ages ago.
What I read blew my mind. Or fucked it, to paraphrase the title of the first novella of the Administration Saga by Manna Francis, Mind Fuck.
I've spent the last few days in perfect bliss, taking my time to read each chapter with a growing pleasure. Fortunately, my blissful reading is not over, because I've already ordered the novellas Manna Francis didn't publish on her website (and the other ones I've already read because she owns my soul, of course), and my wunderbar mailman has just delivered the first batch of the order, freshly arrived from England, Quid pro quo. <333 ILU, mailman.
Maybe you've already read it or heard about it and maybe you're quite fed up about it now, but I just need to shout my everlasting love for this jewel here.
What I particularly adored is the sheer ambition of the author. I just don't know how many lives she lived before she could come up with such a believable story and background. It's not just m/m romance, it's also a thrilling detective story set in a vivid totalitarian context, and a spot-on portrait of human nature in general. Well, I have to admit it's also filled with very sexy sex scenes, but I loved it even beyond that, so that must really mean something ;) . I loved it because of all the different moral shades of grey, because of the credibility of the whole : the characters are really tangible, and I could relate to how they acted. In that way, I could compare it to HBO's most excellent TV show, The Wire, which is about the greatest compliment I could ever address to any other work of art.
Reading it, I also fell hopelessly in love with someone that doesn't even exist. I'm jealous of Manna Francis for creating Valantin Toreth; here's one character I wish I could have invented myself. I've never seen a character so fucked in the head and so psychotic, but at the same time, extremely charming, and even heart-breaking at times. This is the first fiction I've read where I actually shouted in front of my computer screen, whenever the main character was putting himself in a stupid situation in which he was bound to get hurt (no need to say, I felt extremely silly each time I did it, but couldn't help myself). My heart bled along with his, and I've never felt such a strong bond with a fictional character before.
So, read it; it's available for free online on Manna Francis's website (see links above), and that's extremely marvellous in itself. Read it not just because it's m/m romance, but because this is literature you would have tremendous regrets *not* reading, I swear.
Here are a few sketches I did, inspired by the saga. I mainly drew Toreth, because I have some difficulties drawing Warrick - I just don't "get" this character. I like him too (not as much as I love Toreth, anyway), but I really don't understand him (although there is someone who actually captured him well, I think; it's this fanart on Manna Francis's website that I thought absolutely beautiful, sensual and very sensitive: Warrick by Lilithium )
