French animation - part 2
Oct. 23rd, 2011 11:15 amSo let's talk a bit about French animation again, if you will, because very interesting things have been produced in the last months.
First, an animation genius (with whom my crazy ex-flatmate has been infatuated for months), Jérémie Périn, who possesses a very strong artistic vision and is renowned for the punk streak of his works. Périn doesn't hesitate to dabble with disturbing themes and sexual imagery and it shows in his latest video clip for the band DyE's new single, Fantasy. NC-17, NSFW; watch the clip to the very end, I think that the story is pretty incredible and it will make your brains go boom:
Second, there is sort of a theme to this post: I don't know if it's the same in the US, but there are actually a lot of French animators who also draw comic books these days. So sometimes both worlds are joined when they decide to animate a full trailer for one of their latest works in comics. That was the case with completely batshit crazy friends of mine from the Studio Catfish who produced this trailer for the release of the seventh volume of their exciting and tear-jerkingly funny comics series, Zblu Cops.
The second trailer is based on a new comics series called Teotl. Ankama is a French video games company which decided to diversify in comics publishing and animation production, so sometimes those departments interconnect within the company and are able to produce incredible stuff like this:

Finally, I wanted to talk about Pistouvi, which is just a comic book without an animated trailer, but both of its authors, Merwan Chabane and Bertrand Gatignol, originally came from the world of animation. I fell completely in love with those first pages from Pistouvi; their level of perfection just about kills me:
