sevenswells: (Th'orly? (Thor))

Here's precisely what I've been looking like for the past  few days:

And for no reason in particular, which is all the more infuriating. I'm just one big ball of grump and frustration. And scaly skin.

And I was so caught up in my crankiness I forgot to tell you about Thor the movie. I've also started watching Doctor Who (the rebooted series from 2005) since about two weeks ago -- and I'm already halfway through season 4. Also, The Eagle: gay movie of the year until Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes 2, in all evidence.

-So, yeah, I really liked Kenneth Brannagh's Thor. First because I thought they had the character down spat: yes, Thor is a very solar character, badass, impetuous, arrogant, super strong and not exactly prone to subtlety or self-doubt, but also funny, sweet and sometimes showing unexpected bouts of insight and reflection -- which is why I love that Marvel character so much in the first place. Some people had the gall to say in front of me that he lacked depth as a character, compared to Downey Jr's Iron Man for example, so I had to punish them promptly by removing their eyeballs from their sockets with a plastic fork. I'm sorry, but learning filial piety, wisdom, humility, self-sacrifice, compassion when you're a god and a prince and a warrior and an heir to the throne of motherfucking Asgard is a bit of a bigger step in my book than realizing that selling weapons might not be a good thing. Thor is a great character because he learns stuff at the price of everything that he is and owns.
And Chris Hemsworth was absolutely PERFECT. In every single aspect. I said the character isn't exactly subtle, but Hemsworth managed not to make Thor appear *dumb*, which had to be something of a challenge. He's a very good actor, and I found his Thor extremely touching; you could really see all those ~*unspoken feelings*~ contained behind this rough and manly exterior. And speaking of his exterior, I THOR-OUGHLY (ho ho ho) enjoyed Mr Hemsworth's mouth-wateringly ripped body's appearance on screen.

It was a work of art. No, seriously. Kiri summed it up perfectly: less muscled would have looked ridiculous, more muscled would have looked ugly; somehow Hemsworth managed to get the absolute perfect body for the role. Don't change a thing, Chris, this is, like Goldilocks's porridge, just right. Also, THOSE JEANS. *stares*

Second, I liked the fact that they didn't class up Asgard. Asgard was super camp and fake and shiny, which is how it's supposed to be. I mean, come on, the original Norse mythology IS super camp as it is: a ~**rainbow**~ bridge, seriously, Norse mythology? You can't class that up. You just can't. It'll look ridiculous no matter what. So yeah, I was glad they kept Asgard in all its original bling-bling glory and didn't follow the recent trend in comics adaptations to darken everything to help the medicine go down and make outrageous stuff appear believable. Bring on rainbow bridges and plastic armors and lens-flared CG, I'm all for it!

Third, Loki. He was maybe just a tad too sensitive for me, but overall I liked Tom Hiddleston's performance. I liked the fact that movie!Loki actually showed a good deal of affection towards his brother and not only jealousy; ambiguity suits the character wonderfully. Plus when he appeared in front of Thor in street clothes bastard looked super foine. So, yeah, Loki FTW. Go check [livejournal.com profile] pollums  's opinion on the subject. 'nuff said.

Finally, the Destroyer had a nice ass. No, seriously. In that scene where it turned around to bitchslap Thor we all went "DAYUM, DESTROYER, WERK IT!" And it's just a giant metal golem thing that kills everything so that must mean something.

Maybe the only thing that I didn't like so much was Sif; her costume was completely anti-sexy, and her character was kind of meh overall (Nephyla and I called her a bitch out loud in the cinema when she said "YOU GUISE, LOKI HAS *ALWAYS* BEEN JEALOUS OF THOR YOU KNOW" out of nowhere, that was totally uncalled for and also untrue at that point of the movie. The original Sif would have never been such a gossip monger, that would have been clearly below her).

-I'm sorry, and maybe I'm gonna get myself killed for writing this down, but I don't like David Tennant's Doctor. I don't even think Tennant's a good actor for starters. My heart broke when Nine disappeared, and it never really mended since -- I think Matt Smith's Eleven might change that, but I haven't reached his season yet. Also, and again, I'm sorry, but I think Ten is a major douchebag. I disliked Martha Jones as a companion just like everyone else, but at the end of season 3 I just ended up pitying her, because I realized she just had the bad luck to fall for the wrong kind of guy. Seriously, though; he'll never consider her as his equal, he just keeps using her as it pleases him, and she is constantly reminded throughout season 3 how she'll never be more than Rose's rebound. I was truly horrified at the double episode "Family of Blood" where at the end Ten goes back to see the Nurse, and it basically goes like

TEN: HAI GURL, I LIKE YOUR STYLE, HOP IN MY TARDIS!

DIGNIFIED NURSE: You know, it's not because you look like the guy I fell in love with that you're him. Also, he was more badass than you'll ever be, cuz you just hid and ruined everybody's life whereas he sacrificed himself to save the world. So, yeah, thanks, but no thanks.

TEN: DON'T BE LIKE THAT, EVERYTHING THAT HE WAS I COULD BE TOO YOU KNOW

ME *cringing*: OMG, TEN, HOW INAPPROPRIATE IS THAT??? WHAT KIND OF MANWHORE ARE YOU?!

DIGNIFIED NURSE: I just told you you're not him and you'll never be him, are you deaf, or stupid? You. Can't. Replace him. Okay? Plus it hurts me to see your face, so go away.

TEN: NEVERMIND THAT SERIOUSLY COME WITH ME IN MY TARDIS IT'S AWESOME

All this with Martha standing by; Martha who's waited for him for three months and literally was at his service every day. She wiped his ass, got treated like a slave, heard racist insults every day for three months, and this is what she gets at the end of it, for her trouble. Nevermind love, he can't even show her respect!

So, for now, Nine is definitely my Doctor. I'm dying to get to Eleven, because for now I can't abide Ten's behaviour, although now that Donna's here he's a little bit better, cuz there's no sexual tension bullshit whatsoever, thank god for that. It's like what she said to him on the Christmas special where she appeared for the first time: he needs someone to stop him. And it seems now she's just the right person for the job. Might I add, Catherine Tate is a wonderful actress, too. They're basically best buds on a road trip and that's the way it should be. I'm down with that.

-Finally, The Eagle. Go see that movie. Ancient Rome, Roman centurion, Briton slave. With Billy Elliott as the Briton slave, and a super hunk with a ridiculous name as the centurion. But the following review says it all and far better than me (thanks [livejournal.com profile] jainas  for the link)

Also, consider this: there is a kink meme, and some fills are written... in LATIN. FICS IN LATIN. FICS IN MOTHERFUCKING LATIN.
New fandom, BAD! But so shiny. Oh, so shiny. The third (or is it fourth?) part of the review contains fics recs, and damn those fics are good. I swear you'll learn new words too. God I love Ancient Rome.

Speaking of recs, giant Sherlock rec post coming soon. I was just waiting for some WiPs to finish but then I decided to hell with it; rec post for you guys on Monday, kay? I love you. Even though I'm in such a bitchy mood these days.

I like Eleven, but he certainly can be a douchebag. He is SO MEAN TO JACK! There's a lovely little scene with Martha and Jack talking about him...

I am dying to see Thor! I may have to go by myself, but I am going dammit!!!

And now I have to see The Eagle. I mean, REALLY HAVE TO. Thanks!

Ha, so Eleven's a douchebag too? Damn. é___è Maybe Nine didn't last long enough to become a jerk, so that's why he seems so decent XD

And YES, the Eagle, ABSOLUTELY indispensable!

No! I'm an idiot! I meant TEN!!!!!! Eleven is not a douchebag at all. He is a lovely Time Lord.

And it turns out a couple of friends are coming to Thor with me, so yay.

Well, I kind of like him too, kind of, but he manages to scandalize me in a way that Nine never did. I guess it's a bit like Batman; sometimes he can be a giant prick and his morals aren't always exactly clean, but overall you never really hate Batman. So I like the Doctor overall, but Ten sure can piss me off. X/
I have no idea what the fandom is like, but it seems kind of scary from where I'm standing from, I have to say.

But do watch Thor and the Eagle, they're not, like, the best movies ever, but you'll definitely have a good time watching them I think ^^

I liked Martha, but I think it's mostly because she's in such a terrible situation the whole time, with Ten being a jerk to her. I'm uncomfortable with how they played that, frankly.

Donna is by far my favourite companion.

I enjoyed David Tennant on the whole, but I also missed 9 a lot. It took me time to warm up to 10.

I agree with absolutely everything in your comment. Although I'm still trying to warm up to Ten, but there are some stuff I still can't forgive the character. I guess I'll miss him when he goes away too. I don't know if it's because he only had one season or because I'm suffering from some sort of duckling complex, like I'll follow the first person I set my newborn eyes on forever, but I'm still crying over Nine. And sometimes fiercely thinking, when Ten is acting like a jerk, without being able to stop myself "NINE WOULD HAVE NEVER DONE THAT!" Even though, yeah, I know, it's supposed to be the same character more or less. The whole concept of those series is a bit cruel in itself, don't you think? You get used to one Doctor, and you start loving him, and then he's replaced, and you hate the new guy, and then you start liking him too at the precise moment where he's about to be replaced...

I thought that too, the shift from 9 to 10. It took me a while, but then he was just the doctor and I got over it. But the oddest thing, the transition from 10 to 11 happened for me almost instantaneously, so I think there's more to it. I think we lost 9 too soon, and 10 we keep a little too long. I won't spoil you, but I will be curious to hear your take on the last 10 episode, which I think is...well. You'll see.

It's kind of hard to pin things on the doctor as an overall character. He shifts from version to version, and it's not really clear to me which of his characteristics are meant to be innate. He's largely this innocuous gentle soul, but then from time to time he's terrifying cold. He cycles through his companions and never looks back. I liked that they addressed that in the Sarah Jane episode, but it's true: he deserts people. He wants some people along with him even though it hurts them (Martha). I figured this disconnect (loveable, happy-go-lucky, generous and kind/cruel, cold, thoughtless) is really the only real mark of him being an alien, the result of avoiding spending money on prosthetics and effects, but really anticipating something like the revamped Battlestar Galactica. The aliens look just like us, but their basic values and motivations are not of us. You think you know them, but you really, really don't. So I find I am more emotionally connected to the companions than to the doctor. The companions are more consistent as characters.

I enjoy Amy, but I don't think any companion will have my heart the way Donna does.
