Guys, if anyone is still out there on LJ, I need recs!

Specifically genderqueer!Sherlock recs, or male to female/trans* woman Sherlock -- I think there are quite a few of these, but I need the good ones.

Do you know any, f-list? Pretty please?
sevenswells: (Default)
So one more thing, and then I'll try my hardest to leave the matter alone. I've thought about it for like, fifteen minutes, and came up with what I think would be a better ending to His Last Vow. Here's how I would rewrite the episode:

Under a cut because SPOILERS )
sevenswells: (Default)
Finally, this is my "His Last Vow" review, full of swearing and spoilers. Anyone is welcome to debate it, because if I missed something I want to know and I want to understand what the fuck was going on in this episode.

Last warning: SPOILERS for His Last Vow (also lots and lots of swearing) )

You know what? After all is said and done, I love hiatus. I love this fandom, I love its theories, I love its crack, I love its art, manips, vids, meta, fanfictions that are so much better than the original material. Yes there are crazy annoying people in it but those people would be crazy and annoying with or without the show, whereas what the fans express as love (and not hate) in this fandom is unique and beautiful and to me shines better and brighter than anything else in the world.
And now I can say I probably enjoy the hiatus between each season more than I enjoy the show.
I love you, Sherlock fandom, and this is all that matters in the end.

P.S.: and you, Mystrade shippers, are the most ADORABLE shippers this side of the galaxy

Blablabla need more time to sit down and think about that episode but er... It felt a lot like recent Doctor Who writing (by... guess whom? Yes, Steven Moffat! That's the one!). Where you start the episode and think "wow hey great start this is actually quite good" and then by the end you're like "wat what WHAT? WHAT? WHAT THE FUCK? THAT DOESN'T MAKE EVEN A LICK OF SENSE!"

So my opinion for now is: good moments here and there, but bullshit plot all over. I'll develop more on all that later.

Title: We Can't Stop
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sevenswells
Artist/Song: "We Can't Stop" by Bastille (Miley Cyrus cover)
Fandom: BBC Sherlock
Summary: Sherlock, John and Mary make my heart bleed. Although this vid is more about Sherlock and his relationship to John that's bound to change since John is marrying Mary; so it's sort of slashy and sort of angsty idek leave me alone
Rating: Gen
Spoilers: This is pretty much all of the Sign of Three that I crammed into one fanvid, it's even in chronological order
Notes: I sort of slap-dashed this fanvid together because I really, really wanted to make a fanvid about this glorious episode and I really, really wanted to use this particular Bastille gem with it
Made with Windows Live Movie Maker, it was the first time I used it and it was very limited so the editing is a bit basic -- but still, the song matches completely

Okay so long-ass Empty Hearse review, let's get this over with.

Overall that episode left me very conflicted, especially after the Caitlin Moran Debacle; the references to the fans and the fandom didn't feel respectful or an homage but rather dismissive and mocking IMO. Which -- not cool. Or maybe it would have been fine if the creators of the show hadn't repeatedly called the fangirls delusional after playing fast and loose with queer baiting, screaming NO HOMO at the top of their lungs and if there hadn't been Morangate. Also it would actually make a change if the fan viewpoint wasn't constantly played for laughs. Dude, you're fanboys yourselves. Don't think you're better than us, some fics are leagues above this episode, come the fuck on.
There's also a horrible thought that crossed my mind: it's that the treatment of the fans within this episode maybe actually gave Caitlin Moran inspiration and sort of enabled her to do what she did. I'm not saying Gatiss is responsible for what happened, but when you start to make fun of the fans like that I guess increases the odds of something like that happening.
Anyway, my theory is that so far in each season of Sherlock, there's two very good if not brilliant episodes, and then there's always one that's a bit rubbish if not complete crap (The Blind Banker in season 1 and Hounds of the Baskerville in season 2). After watching The Sign of Three, I think The Empty Hearse might very well be the rubbish one. Which is a shame, really, because The Empty House is one of the most iconic Sherlock Holmes stories from canon and, again, most fics that revolved around Sherlock's return during the hiatus were more solid plot-wise and more satisfying emotion-wise. So personal message to Mofftiss: don't mock the fans if you can't do better than them, guys. Try to write good stories. That's what we do.

Let's do the rest in bullet points, since I can't be arsed to write up a proper review:

You left me in the dark )

Hmmm it seems I'm a bit grumpy today so it shows in my review which appears more negative than I intended. I didn't hate that episode all that much, really; it's just that as a season opener for a show that's been on hiatus for TWO YEARS, it felt a bit like a letdown.
Luckily, The Sign of Three set everything right again for me and I think it skyrocketed to first place as my favourite Sherlock episode of all three seasons (even the mystery was good! Well done, show, well done!).

Now I need fics, angsty fanvids and angsty songs to make some angsty fanvids myself. Yeah.

Nevermind The Empty Hearse, wasn't The Sign of Three AN AWESOME EPISODE OR WHAT?????????

OH MY GOD THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOUT!!!
sevenswells: (Sherlock and security blanket WIN)
I've just watched the Empty Hearse, I need a bit of time to regroup and work out how I precisely felt about it.

Overall, liked it. I think it could have been better, but still, fairly decent writing and mostly good episode.

I need to watch it again and then write more about my feelings.

Just one thing I've decided tho: ANTHEA IS OUR COULSON. That is all.

Just finished re-watching New Who season 1 to 4.5 to initiate friends and make them cry their hearts out (because that's what real friends do), so I thought I'd give this meme a shot, in celebration.

Possible spoilers for Sherlock and new Who under the cut )

Have you guys read Bel Canto by bendingsignpost yet?

, READ IT . NOW.

It's more or less Phantom of Opera-based (veeeery veeeery loosely), except you know how much I dislike the Phantom of the Opera, but THIS, THIS IS INCREDIBLY GOOD. I started reading it on my Kindle when I was in Venice, and this fic is so good and well-written that I almost ended up not visiting Venice at all, I just wanted to stay home and keep reading, I swear. And I was so in love with it that it drove me to buy a carnival mask there, even though I swore to myself that I wouldn't indulge in that kind of stupid tourist-y nonsense... but after this fic MASKS APPEARED SO FUCKING APPEALING TO ME I SWEAR TO GOD
I JUST HAD TO BUY ONE BECAUSE I'M SUCH A SLAVE TO MY PASSIONS

And not only is the fic amazing, but, without spoiling too much, it revolves around an opera being written by Sherlock who's a composer in this fic, and some musicians and opera afficionados in the fandom have loved the fic and the descriptions of said opera in the fic so much that they're actually trying to compose it and make it real (and of course the opera in the fic is in Italian, so the people writing it are writing and composing in Italian. Holy fucking shit)! And some really good bel canto singers have tried singing it too!! Everything is here on this tumblr: http://belcantoopera.tumblr.com/

And here's an extract that I particularly love, it actually brought tears to my eyes: http://belcantoopera.tumblr.com/post/53742616076/i-tried-out-the-snippet-of-act-2-scene-2-i

Elementary's pilot was pretty bad, you guys. I don't know what they have in store for the rest of the series, but if this pilot is supposed to set the tone, colour me unconvinced.

Even if you try to pretend it's not Sherlock Holmes at all, it doesn't really work as a detective story, and it's a whole boring mess.

I have my qualms about the mysteries in Sherlock, I think many things about them don't work and have major logical flaws, but in the end it doesn't really matter, because on the whole it's entertaining as hell. And the whole world discussed at large the chemistry between Cumberbatch and Freeman that is so incredible and shiny you could see it from the moon.

In Elementary, as much as I love both Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller separately, it just doesn't work. The characters are sketchy at best, lacking depth, there's just nothing between them to chew on; the relationship dynamics between them were so sloppy and uninteresting. I think it must be because of a huge casting error: Liu should have been Holmes, there's no way around it. I can't believe they haven't thought of that first. During the whole episode it was so screamingly blatant it was distracting. And the only other character that I liked was Gregson. Gregson was awesome (and a bit sexy). Again, I love Jonny Lee Miller, I think he's a truly great actor, but he had nothing to do in there. Liu as Holmes, anyone else as Watson (Archie Panjabi?

Hmmm oh God yes. I would loves me some Archie Panjabi as Watson. She would totally qualify as badass ex-army doctor IMO)

Oh, god, and the mystery. The mystery was so crappy even I could have thought of something better. Even as a basic murder-of-the-week formula show it just doesn't work, WTF CBS, seriously.

I really wanted to like it. No, I mean, really. We'll have to wait months again before season 3 begins, and I wanted to have at least  Elementary to nimble on in between, but now I don't really want to watch the rest.
sevenswells: (PIMP Mycroft (Sherlock))
I just got this idea for a fic, a Mystrade fic
Inspired by the infamous Old Spice commercial
This is the prompt

"Anything is possible when you're on a date with the British Government and not a lady. Mycroft is on a horse."

More specifically, Mycroft takes Lestrade on the most epic date in the history of ever, with spies and diamonds and rescue squads and two tickets to that thing you love.

I DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO WRITE IT. I WON'T HAVE THE TIME TO WRITE ANYTHING FIC UNTIL I DIE OF OLD AGE BECAUSE I JUST HAVE TOO FUCKING MUCH ON MY PLATE FOREVER.

But if someone on my f-list wants to write it, please drop me a line, I will make art for you and I will bear your children and forever love you.
sevenswells: (PIMP Mycroft (Sherlock))
Mystrade!

Does anyone have good Mystrade recs for me? I've already read At Least There's the Football which was splendid, A Reliable Man which has to be the greatest characterization of Mycroft in the fandom ever, and Puppet On A String which is unbearably good but has left me very frustrated because it's a WIP and I'm gasping for more.

Please give me Mystrade recs, F-list, pleaaaaaase!

P.S.: And here's a beautiful Mystrade fanvid, btw: Those Things You Do by duchesscloverly on Tumblr

what_alchemy's post on tumblr about ship-bashing in the fandom, READ IT, IT'S IMPORTANT:

Can I just say: GOD, THANK YOU and YES, THIS!

Also, a word to my fellow fangirls: you don't have to say "I ship them but I know they aren't like that in canon".

You don't have to make excuses. You can just stop at "I ship them." You don't know how they are in canon, nobody does, and the people who tell you otherwise are fools. Thank you for your attention.

I WANT TO GO TO LONDON BECAUSE I MISS IT LIKE CRAZY BUT I CAN'T GO BECAUSE OF THE STUPID FUCKING OLYMPIC GAMES WHICH SUCKS BALLS
And anyway I don't have any money so fuck it
Last night I dreamt that Benedict was giving me a foot massage, and guess what, he was good at it
I have a lot of stuff to do but I'm still going MAD from boredom
I need a new season of Top Chef why isn't there a new season of Top Chef I'd even settle for a new season of Top Chef Just Desserts the last French one was super dull except for the one time they invited Stéphanie back every single episode of French Top Chef should have Stéphanie in it
I don't know how to end this post so have a few recs of really good fics I've read lately (SPOILERS for Sherlock season 2):

With Patience He Stands Waiting by [livejournal.com profile] emungere: it's Mycroft/Moriarty and she makes it work. Better yet, she makes canon work, when I thought canon on this particular point was absolute bullshit (Mycroft just handing out informations on Sherlock to Moriarty just because the guy won't talk? Come on). The two characters are absolutely pitch-perfect; Mycroft is a tough one to write well, so is Jim, and usually you can't get more than one very difficult caracter completely right in the same fic, and yet emungere aced it, their voices and interactions are all amazing and so cleverly thought-out. I'm wowed by this writer all over again.

Don't Explain by rotaryphones: A post-Reichenbach/Empty House fic which HURTS, and it HURTS SO GOOD. Fantastic angst, the kind of which you can't get enough because this is the first post-Reichenbach fic I've read where John's psychological recovery over Sherlock's return is so deep and tortuous, and where John appears very, very human. Great fic, can't wait for more.

Previous (mainly fics) rec posts here, here and here FYI

I keep accumulating Sherlock fan stuff I want to rec, and I can never find the time to put up one big post, so I've decided I'll do it bits by bits. Here below is, as it is announced in the title of this post, fanvids, art recs and a fanmix rec.
